Seasonal Sadness? Call Us!

I had such an interesting conversation with Ngo during our last session. First of all, Ngo challenged me to run a mile on the treadmill. He said, "take it easy", yet the exhilaration of running again whipped me into a need for speed. And I was not in pain.

Relax

If you've been reading this blog, you know that I was in the Army and I ran myself into painful legs, but I can honestly tell you that after training with Ngo for two months now, I feel no pain while running. What took me to that place was relaxation and less tension, which Ngo has taught me how to work on every time I train with him. But the conversation that we had regarding the holidays occurred during my intermittent cardio session. This was the interval of elliptical-cardio between the circuit of dumb-bell-raised squats, standing chest presses, push-ups, and toe touches, and was specifically about the holidays.

You see, I suffer from  'seasonal affective disorder'. This is the manifestation of anxiety and/or depression specifically during the holidays. I talked to Ngo about it and explained what it's like. The feeling of forced happiness in watching others genuinely enjoy the holidays came up. The years of spending the holidays in an Army barracks by choice because I had such extreme dread during this period was also mentioned. Ngo was curious in that he wondered how a person might experience these feelings during such a happy time. And like much of the wisdom that Ngo lays on me during our talks I thought about the possible reasons for my seasonal melancholy.

I successfully completed three rounds of the circuit in an hour and left feeling better than ever. But one thing that stayed with me as I ate my ritual post-workout salad and pozole at El Centro in Hell's Kitchen, I realized that this year the seasonal effective feelings were curiously absent. I'm going to say that Ngo and spending time with him training has much to do with that precedent in my life. Working on fitness, diet, and mind is the best medicine for seasonal sadness.
